monday. average day. stormy in the morning. in fact, black as night. street lights were turning on. store signs on. it was black. that was at 7 in the morning.
it left, and the sky’s were clear and blue. going home, much of the same.
I walked the dogs about 7:40. you could hear the thunder off in the distance. there was quite a bit of it. brought the dogs back in and was watching the cubbies. went to the window, and the darkness from the morning was back. all this in about 5 minutes.
blam. the wind was unreal. walking out the front door, i was watching a birch tree out front just pushing forward. i thought that its time had come. it wasn’t going to survive this one. the rains came fast, hard and heavy. it was a vicious storm. one that you don’t want to have. lightning was unbelievable. it was uncommonly bright and frequent. And then, the power went out. came back for a sec, and gone again. later, the news reported that there were over 90000 lightning strikes in a 4 hour period, and that 70% of those were positively charged (the really bad kind). I believe it.
that was at 10 minutes after 8. next time we saw power, was at 11:10 am… on wednesday. wednesday.
we bought a gen to run the important stuff. the pump. didn’t want a repeat of mothers day. the fridge. the freezer. tossed some stuff from the fridge that was marginal. the rest didn’t seem to suffer too much.
it was also odd that the whole time, the folks across the street had power. there were at least a couple folks crossing extension cords across the street. most of the rest making the decision to just let things go. we, along with about 10 other neighbors did the generator thing.
so. life is back to normal. the power came back. the cords were put away. the fridge pushed back against the wall. the whole thing reminded me of a storm we had in lockport all those years ago.
this time, we were comparatively lucky, as driving around the neighborhood, there were various roofs that had their skins peeled back and were exposing the wood sheets that are the roof. some houses were missing large areas of siding as well as having lawn furniture and backyard kids toys scattered around their yards as well as those of the neighbors. truly a mess for a lot of people.
so i think, as i said, we were fortunate.
